On the morning of January 16, a visit to ICMS was organized for academic collaboration, with the distinguished presence of Academician Zhu Youyong, renowned as the “Model of The Times” and serving as the chairman of Yunnan Association for Science and Technology and honorary president of Yunnan Agricultural University, and Prof. He Xiahong, vice president of Southwest Forestry University. The meeting was attended by Prof. Li Peng, the deputy director of ICMS, and was presided over by Prof. Wan Jianbo, who also chaired the report meeting. The event drew the participation of over 100 ICMS staff and students.

During the meeting, Academician Zhu shared his experiences in poverty alleviation as a designated member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, specifically focusing on the Lancang County Technology Poverty Alleviation Program. His presentation, titled “Composing the Scientific Paper on the Land,” highlighted the team’s efforts to connect the local understory habitat with the biological characteristics of Panax notoginseng, thereby facilitating the return of traditional Chinese medicine to its natural mountain and forest habitats. The team successfully developed a high-quality, high-efficiency, cost-effective production technology system for organic Panax notoginseng under the forest, with independent intellectual property rights. This innovative approach effectively utilized understory resources. Additionally, they created a high-quality, efficient, ecological, and safe potato planting system for the winter season by leveraging the biological characteristics of potatoes and combining them with the winter and dry season habitats. This system achieved remarkable disease suppression and innovation in winter resources. Following Academician Zhu’s presentation, Prof. He Xiahong delivered a thematic report on “Scientific and Technological Innovation of Chinese Medicinal Materials in the Forest.” This report further elaborated on the important experiences and research achievements of Academician Zhu’s team in the understory Chinese medicinal materials industry, covering major challenges and directions, key issues and innovations, exemplary promotion and application, and ecological effects and evaluation.

After the meeting, the staff and students from ICMS expressed their appreciation for the presentations Academician Zhu and Professor He gave. They found the presentations not only informative in terms of theoretical explanations and personal experiences but also insightful from political and practical perspectives. The presentations provided clear guidance on conducting scientific research in the field and offered significant practical significance in integrating personal careers into national endeavours.

In the afternoon, Prof. Chen Xin and Prof. Wan Jianbo warmly welcomed Academician Zhu and Prof.He. They accompanied them on a visit to the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine. Prof. Chen Xin hoped for collaborative exchanges and cooperation with Academician Zhu’s team. ICMS was eager to explore the future research direction of the Panax notoginseng industry, establish a cooperation framework based on the actual production needs of Chinese herbal medicines in forest environments, focus on the development of high-level scientific research achievements, prioritize achievement transformation, and promote the implementation of technology. Academician Zhu and Professor He commended the current work and achievements of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine. He provided valuable suggestions based on their rich experience in modern planting and traditional Chinese medicine industrial development. Following the meeting, both parties expressed their intention to collaborate on ongoing research related to Panax notoginseng leaves. They have also begun formulating a cooperation plan to provide technical support for quality research in Chinese medicine with the aim of assisting in the industry transformation of Chinese medicine research.
